Improving comfort and support with an Ostomy Belt

Ostomy life

After my ileostomy surgery, I don’t think anybody told me that I would need some sort of supportive belt or cover for my ostomy appliance. To be honest, I was so focused on healing at the time that the thought never really crossed my mind.

But as I started to heal, and move around and go more places, I began to notice that my appliance would annoyingly flop around. It felt strange having this “thing” protruding from my abdomen. And it made me fairly self-conscious.

Some people with an ostomy will use a simple fabric cover. Others are perfectly happy using nothing at all.

But after doing some research online, I found that there are a ton of belt-like products out there that can be used to cover and contain your ostomy appliance…keeping it closer and more snug to your belly. When worn under clothing, it can make your ostomy appliance practically invisible.

Choosing a belt

Ostomy belts come in a variety of different material colors and types. Usually, they are made of a stretchy fabric (think yoga-pant material) which is breathable. Most are adjustable with velcro. They usually have a zippered or velcro opening at the bottom where your pouch goes, so that you can empty easily.

I recommend purchasing an ostomy belt from a supplier that will allow you to submit your own measurements so that it can be tailor-made to fit your unique body shape and preferences.

Belts can be customized depending on which side of your abdomen your ostomy is located (left or right), or whether you wear your appliance more vertically or horizontally.

Typically, you will give measurements for your waist size and the flange size (diameter) of your ostomy appliance. If you are uncertain of which measurements you need, or how to measure, ask your local ostomy nurse. Usually, they will be happy to assist in fitting.

Other considerations

Once you find a belt style you like and that works for you, it may be a good idea to purchase an extra one (if you can afford it) so that you always have a spare. Most are machine-washable with cold water on a gentle cycle.

Some people say that wearing an ileostomy belt can even reduce the incidence of appliance leaks. From personal experience, I can say that this is probably true.

Apart from being a daily clothing accessory, ostomy belts are also really helpful (almost necessary) if you are doing any type of exercise or physical activity. Some wear them swimming, for intimacy, or even when sleeping.

Some manufacturers (or even local seamstresses) can further customize ostomy belts with a wider or stiffer material that can provide hernia support. If you are dealing with an abdominal or peristomal hernia, this added rigidity can keep your hernia in place, helping to reduce pain when bending and flexing. For me, it helped a lot.

Most ostomy belts are not hugely expensive either (usually in the CAD $150 range, depending on features and fabric). In my opinion, it was money well spent. Also, if you have extended health coverage, check to see if the cost (or a portion) of an ostomy belt is covered. Many times they are.

Bottom line

Ostomy belts can provide you with additional comfort, and some peace of mind knowing your ostomy appliance is supported and protected.

Most can be easily tucked under clothing. They are great for helping to conceal your ostomy (if that is something you want) and preventing your appliance from constantly shifting around.

Those of us living with an ostomy need all the support we can get:)

I highly, highly recommend trying one – especially if you are new to the ostomy game.

Check out StealthBelt: their products are high quality and reasonably priced. They have several different styles to choose from and all are customizable. There are a bunch of other manufacturers online too, but this is the one I’ve had success with.
