Ostomy  “Go Bag” – what is it and why you need one

I never leave the house without it

Call it what you want…Every Day Carry Kit…travel-satchel…man purse…for those living with an ostomy, having the essential “gear” with you at all times is essential.

I take mine wherever I go. And to tell you the truth…I rarely, if ever, need to use the stuff inside it (99.9%
of my appliance changes are done at home).

But it gives me peace of mind. And, on that rare instance where I have had a leak or ostomy mishap while out and about, or had to change my appliance, it has proven to be a godsend.

I use a sling-bag similar to this:

You can find them cheap on Amazon. Bonus: the bag has a side pocket for a water bottle.

Organizing everything

Tucked inside my bag is a small travel case to keep everything organized.

These are also super cheap on Amazon.

What is on my list of “kit essentials”?

  • Pack of flushable wipes
  • Medical scissors
  • 2 x extra ostomy pouches
  • 2 x extra barrier rings
  • 1 x small bottle ostomy powder
  • 1 x small bottle m9 liquid
  • 1 x pack Kleenex
  • 1 x adhesive remover spray
  • Hand sanitizer
  • A few extra pieces of barrier tape
  • 3-4x plastic kitchen bags
  • Stoma marking guide + felt marker

The bag is also good for carrying random things – gum, my car keys, earbuds, chapstick, phone charger. I usually keep a few packets of electrolytes in there too (EmergenC).

If you are recently post-surgery, it may also be a good idea to keep your needed wound care supplies in the kit.

After my surgery, I’m honestly not sure if the ostomy nurse told me I would need a kit like this. They likely did…but I was probably so overwhelmed that I can’t remember now.

I encourage anybody with an ostomy to have a similar kit with them. You never know when you are going to need it. Hopefully rarely. But when you do, you will be thankful.
